Over the years, we have seen all types of sport-related injuries; everything from fractured jaws and teeth, to luxated or avulsed teeth. These types of injuries can be very costly to treat. A properly fitted and professionally made bite guard can help prevent dental trauma-related sports injuries. 
How is our guard different from ‘boil and bite’ guards found at local athletic stores?
  • We make them specifically for the athlete via dental impressions.
  • The ‘Heavy’ and ‘Heavy Pro’ are made with special bands to protect against heavy forces and blows.
No one thinks about the jaw joint (TMJ), but we do! ‘Boil and bite’ style guards may destabilize the TMJ. When the athlete bites, most likely he or she will be contacting just the most posterior area of the guard (since the jaw is a hinge). A very unfavorable position for the TMJ and may even cause the guard to displace if the athlete bites forcibly. 
  • In addition to taking a professional impression, we make jaw relation records. 

Why is that important? 

With the professional guard in place, when the athlete bites down, the lower teeth fit into groves designed for them. All teeth are supported and hit evenly placing the TMJ into its most favorable position. This may help the TMJ to remain stable if the athlete is contacted with force to the head or face.
